Skeoch Hill, near Dumfries, was the site of a huge conventicle in 1678. On this occasion 14,000 people gathered to take communion. They lined up big stones for use as communion tables. Today, nearly 350 years later, you can still see the stones set out in lines. The ministers who officiated were John Welsh, John Blackadder, John Dickson and Samuel Arnot. The crowd was so big that the soldiers were helpless to do anything.
The monument that was erected in the 1800s to commemorate the occasion has a communion cup on top of it. |
