Between the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 and the year 1688, over 100 people from many different walks of life were hanged here.

An inscription containing a list of some of those who died can be seen beside the memorial. They included Archibald Campbell, James Guthrie and Donald Cargill. The last to be executed here was James Renwick.
