The first free General Assembly of the Church of Scotland for 36 years was held in Glasgow in November with Henderson as moderator and Wariston as clerk. The Assembly began a complete reformation of the church. It declared the Articles of Perth, the Book of Canons, the Book of Common Prayer and Episcopalianism itself unlawful. The assembly had ignored the attempts of the king’s commissioner to dissolve it. However king Charles, who was already preparing for war, was not going to accept such a clear rejection of his authority.
